“Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware of the connection between your gums and your heart,” said Dr. Irshad Mohammed, lead dentist in Aspen Dental’s Fairfield office in the Black Rock Shopping Center. “In addition to brushing and flossing every day, and visiting your dentist every six months, it’s important to eat foods that promote good oral health.”

Dr. Mohammed’s Tips:
• Try tea. Drinking green tea is an easy way to ward off the bacteria that causes gum disease. It contains antioxidants called catechins that reduce inflammation and inhibit bacteria. Brew some green tea and then chill it for a cool and healthy summer drink.

• Choose fruits high in vitamin C. Depending on its size, a kiwi can give you 100 percent of your daily vitamin C intake. The vitamin C prevents the collagen in your gums from breaking down which can lead to tender gums more susceptible to disease. Blend kiwis and cantaloupe in a food processor to make a chilled summer soup or use as a topping on your favorite yogurt.

• Go with the grain. Eating whole grains is another simple way to keep your gums and heart healthy. Whole grains are digested more slowly than other grains, which means blood glucose levels rise at a steadier rate and mitigate the body’s production of bacteria that can cause gum and heart disease. Try replacing unrefined white pasta with whole wheat noodles in your pasta salad this summer.

02.16.2010 – As part of a new partnership with Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HW-SC), dentists and hygienists at Aspen Dental provided a day of free dental services to more than 30 HW-SC high school students on Saturday, February 13. During “Love Your Smile Day,” Aspen Dental clinicians, along with dental hygiene students from SUNY Canton, provided students with x-rays, basic cleanings and fluoride treatments. The event was held at Aspen Dental’s Camillus office.

“We were thrilled with the incredible turnout and the positive response from our students and the generous contribution from Aspen Dental,” said Wayne O’Connor, executive director of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection. “Not only do we work with our Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection students to improve academic success but we strive to help them achieve healthy habits leading to their overall well being.”

In addition to Saturday’s event, Aspen Dental recently provided the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection with a four-year, $50,000 grant to support their efforts in the Syracuse City School District. Since 1963, Older Americans Month has been celebrated in the month of May to show appreciation for mature Americans and encourage healthy lifestyles. In observance of Older Americans Month, Aspen Dental offices across the country are providing seniors with information to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles.

• Visit your dentist for regular dental hygiene checkups.
• Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush (unless otherwise specified by your dentist) and rinse with mouthwash. Brushing helps remove food and plaque on both natural teeth and dentures. It also helps prevent development of permanent stains.
• If you are having trouble reaching all areas of your mouth when brushing, look into special toothbrushes to clean hard-to-reach areas. When brushing dentures, use a brush with soft bristles that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures.
• Floss to remove plaque between teeth and below the gum line where your toothbrush can’t reach.
• If you wear full or partial denture, be sure they fit properly and that you are using the correct amount of denture cream. If you experience discomfort or if you are using more than one tube of denture cream every three weeks, your dentures may not fit properly and should be evaluated. Visit your dentist to see if they need to be adjusted.
• Tell your dentist about any medical conditions, recent operations, allergies, and medications you may be taking, or changes to your medications. This will avoid any potential adverse interactions with the medications that your dentist may prescribe.
• Know the warning signs that indicate your mouth may be at risk of infection. Check for red, swollen, bleeding gums when you brush. If you have these symptoms, see a dentist; these maybe signs of gingivitis.
• Watch for red or white patches on your gums, cheeks or tongue, sores that fail to heal within two weeks, or an unusual hard spot on the side of your tongue. These are signs of oral cancer that should be quickly examined by your dentist.

Syracuse, NY May 1, 2009 — Aspen Dental employees and their family members gave Mother Earth a helping hand during two weekends of Earth Day activities. In all, more than 500 people representing more than 60 Aspen Dental offices participated in clean up efforts across 12 states from Maine to Iowa on Saturday, April 18 and Saturday, April 25. About 70 employees and family members from the Aspen Dental Management Inc. Practice Support Center in East Syracuse participated in the effort on April 25.

Members of Aspen Dental’s “Smile Squad” removed trash and debris from parks and other public areas in neighborhoods near the company’s local offices. Activities included picking up debris from along local roadways; weeding; raking leaves; and planting flowers, trees and grass in local parks, nature centers and fish hatcheries.
